5 things you should know about your health plan
1 Urgent care centers cost less than ERs.
We continue to expand access to urgent care centers for nonemergency care when your doctor’s office is closed. These centers cost less than hospital emergency rooms and often are more convenient and less time-consuming. To locate the participating urgent care center nearest you, visit our website or call the customer service number on your member ID card.

2 Deductibles for ER and hospital admissions do not count toward the calendar-year deductible.
If you are admitted to the hospital, you are responsible for a Hospital Per Admission Deductible. This deductible applies to every person covered under your plan for each admission. The Per Admission Deductible is separate from the regular calendar-year deductible, which applies to medical services.

Likewise, you are responsible for a separate Emergency Room Per Visit Deductible for each covered person who goes to a hospital emergency room. This deductible also does not count toward your calendar-year deductible. However, if you go to an emergency room and are admitted to the hospital, the Emergency Room Per Visit Deductible is waived.

If you receive a letter from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida requesting additional information about your injury or illness and other insurance coverage, your prompt reply is vital to getting claims paid. Insurance regulations require insurers to coordinate benefits when there is more than one policy in effect, as when a husband and wife both have health care coverage from their respective employers. One insurer is considered primary, the other secondary. The primary pays its responsibility first. The secondary can then provide benefits for covered services not paid by the primary.

In addition, certain injuries or illnesses may be covered by other types of insurance. For example, if you are in an automobile accident, your medical claims may be covered under your auto policy, which would be considered the primary carrier. If you are hurt on the job, your company’s workers’ compensation policy pays applicable benefits.

4 Generic drugs save you money.
Stretch your prescription drug benefits and reduce your out-of-pocket costs by choosing generic drugs whenever possible. More reasonably priced generic drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are just as safe and effective as their branded counterparts. Talk with your physician about this; most brandname medications have generic alternatives.
