the chat room. Healthcare Advisor
also provides links to resources,
including websites organized by

A vaccination is now available to
protect you against shingles, an often
painful rash caused by the same
virus that causes chicken pox.
The Food and Drug Administration
has approved the vaccine, Zostavax,
for people 60 years and older. The
once-in-a-lifetime vaccination cuts
the risk of developing shingles by
nearly two-thirds.
If you have had chicken pox, you
are at risk for developing shingles.
The chicken pox virus can lay
dormant for decades then reappear.
The rash usually occurs on one side
of the body and lasts for two to four
weeks. In about 20 percent of cases,
extreme pain can persist for weeks,
months or years after the virus
reappears.
Ask your doctor if you should get
the vaccine. It is covered for most
BlueChoice members age 60 or older
who have preventive care benefits as
part of their plan. However, because
benefits vary by plan, check your
member booklet or call the customer
service number on your member
ID card.
