Blueprint for Health
is a master plan whose
benefits go way beyond
your coverage: By helping
you take better care of
yourself and worry less.
By giving you tools to
handle a common cold, a
chronic condition or a
catastrophe. By providing
access to real people, in
real-time, 24/7, for support,
answers and advice when
you need it most. Because
your health insurance isn’t
about us—it’s about you.
The following real-life success stories
illustrate how Blueprint for Health is
played out through the everyday lives
of our members and our philanthropic
foundation.
Even some medical people need
help adopting a healthier lifestyle.
A critical care unit nurse wasn’t
happy with the results of her health
screening at her hospital’s annual
employee health fair sponsored by
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida.
So she had the hospital’s dietician give
her a 1,200-calorie diet recommended
by the American Diabetes Association.
Then, taking advantage of discounts
available to her through our
BlueComplements program, she
joined a Jenny Craig® weight-loss
plan and a fitness center, where she
spends an hour, five times a week.
The results:
- Her total blood cholesterol dropped
from 238 to 177.
- She’s lost 40 pounds.
- She’s dropped five dress sizes.
High blood pressure is called the
“silent killer” for good reason.
There usually aren’t any symptoms
to alert us that our pressure is
dangerously high. A female member
attending a Blue Cross and Blue
Shield of Florida health fair was told
her blood pressure was 150/100. The
nurse offered to make an appointment
for her to see a doctor, but she refused,
promising she would follow up with
her doctor. She did, was admitted to a
hospital with elevated blood pressure
and cardiac arrhythmias, and is
now on medication under her
doctor’s care. She told the BCBSF
health fair nurse, “You may have
saved my life. I went to the doctor
because you asked me to promise
that I would. I am so glad I did.”
The uninsured residents of our state
often go without needed treatment.
Some 250 to 300 Latino children in
South Hillsborough County are being
immunized against childhood
diseases thanks to a two-year, $50,000
grant from The Blue Foundation
for a Healthy Florida to St. Joseph’s
Children’s Advocacy Center in Tampa.
Their Mobile Clinic is the only
provider of well-child care services
to Latino residents in the area. The
Blue Foundation grant is being used
to fund a half-time nurse practitioner
and educate needy families on
important health issues and how
to access services.
