Tips for Being a Smart Healthcare consumer

Photo of woman on the telephoneYour money is valuable—especially the dollars allocated to your health. That’s why it pays to protect the money you decide to spend on healthcare. Here are some tips that can make you a savvier healthcare consumer.

Get to the bottom of it. It’s your right to understand whatever treatment your doctor suggests. Some tests may be unnecessary, so be sure to find out why you need them. Ask questions and seek a second opinion if you’re still not sure.

Follow instructions. It’s important for you to understand exactly what you’re supposed to do when you’re taking prescription medication, participating in a planned treatment or conducting any form of self-care. Follow your doctor’s instructions—this can help you heal properly and avoid any possible complications. If you’re having trouble understanding the instructions, call your doctor’s office for advice.

Do your homework. It’s a good idea to stay in the “know” about the latest news regarding health conditions and treatments. Visit reputable websites—such as BF&M’s online Wellness programme, Wellness Matters!, at www.bfm.bm—that allow you to investigate symptoms and treatments for many different medical conditions and help you monitor your health. Try visiting a bookstore to find a book about a disease or condition. The better informed you are, the better your questions will be and the more detailed answers you’ll get. Also, write your questions down so you won’t forget to ask something important when you see the doctor or nurse.

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Be wary of spending money on products or treatments that make really generous claims. Some “red flags” that should raise your suspicion:

  • Anything that claims to be made from a “secret” recipe
  • Anything that offers a “cure”
  • Products or services that come with a “free” gift
  • Products that are not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration or a similar, reputable organization
