If you’ve ever tried to change an unhealthy habit, you know it isn’t easy. Many people get stuck in the process and return to their old behaviors. In this column, we explore the stages of change that all
people go through—awareness, skill building, and maintenance. Here you’ll find tools to help you form healthy new habits successfully.
Did you know that most smokers try to quit at least two or three times—and often more—before they kick the habit for good? This fact indicates how common it is for people to relapse. Of course, not all habits are as difficult to change as quitting smoking. But if you are attempting to change a habit, it’s important to understand what a relapse is, why it happens, and what to do if you relapse.
What Is a Relapse?
A relapse happens when you revert to your old ways. For example, a relapse occurs when you overeat while on vacation and don’t stop overeating once you return. A lapse occurs when you overeat while on vacation but you get back on track right away. Relapses are common. In fact, only 20 percent of people who make a change stick with it on the first try.
Many things can cause relapses: stress, difficult emotions (anger, anxiety, depression), and poor social support, among others. But if you have relapsed, take heart. The knowledge you have gained learning how to change your behavior can and will help you recover from the relapse.
What to Do if You Relapse
If you relapse, the first thing you should do is not give up. Take stock of the situation: When did the relapse start? What caused it? Once you understand why the relapse happened, you can begin to look at what you need to do to get back on track. If stress caused your relapse, look into ways to reduce the stress in your life. If depression was a factor, then talk with your doctor about how to get treatment.
Keep in mind that to be successful, changing your habit should be a top priority in your life. If you can’t give it your full commitment, then perhaps you need to look more closely at how your habit affects your life. Once you are ready to commit fully and you’ve revised your action plan, then your chance for success is good.
