Depression is a serious medical condition. If you are depressed, you can’t just will yourself to feel better. In fact, if left untreated, depression often gets worse and can lead to suicide.
Of the 19 million people who experience depression every year, only one-third get the treatment they need. This is in part because many people with depression feel helpless and hopeless. Yet most people who get treatment for depression feel better in a few weeks.
Depression affects people differently. Some people feel sad or tired; other people feel numb or irritable. If you think you may be depressed, be sure to tell your doctor about any symptoms you experience, including headaches, tiredness, and sleep disturbances.
