Your doctor may not be part of your daily life, but he or she plays an important part in your life when you need to make decisions about your health care. You play an equally important role. Your doctor needs your consent for any procedure from a shot to surgery. And your doctor will explain your condition or recommended treatment so that you can make the best decision for yourself.
When making a medical decision, the doctor should:
- explain your condition in a way you can understand
- explain the treatment he or she recommends and how successful it is
- explain the risks and benefits of a treatment plan
- explain the risks and benefits if you refuse treatment
If you are acting in the interest of someone else, such as a child or a family member who is unable to make medical decisions, you and the doctor should work together to decide the best treatment for that person.
I Second That Opinion
Your relationship with your doctor should be built on trust. If you are not comfortable with treatments or assessments from your doctor, get a second opinion. Before you seek a second opinion, get a copy of your medical records. The doctor you consult for a second opinion needs your complete medical record to review your health care.
Make an Informed Decision
Before you sign the consent form that gives your doctor the go-ahead to treat you, learn all you can about your condition and treatment options. Talk with your doctor about where to find more information. Make sure you feel comfortable with the health decisions that you and your doctor make. Take an active role in your health care and make sure you get the care that is right for you.
