The federal government passed legislation mandating specific coverage for health plan members who choose to have breast reconstruction surgery after a mastectomy.
This legislation is called the Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act of 1998. For many years, Dean Health Plan has provided coverage for breast reconstruction after a mastectomy and related services. This legislation allows for:
- Reconstruction of the breast on which a mastectomy has been performed
- Surgery and reconstruction for the other breast to produce a symmetrical appearance
- Prostheses
- Care for physical complications during all stages of mastectomy, including lymphedema
