Heads Up for Bicycle Safety

Riding a bike is a great way to exercise during the summer. When you use the right equipment and, most important, a cycling helmet, you can help make sure you have a safe ride.

A bicycle helmet acts as a second skull. The helmet absorbs the shock of any impact, which can minimize or prevent serious head injury. By knowing how to properly size and position your helmet, you can increase its level of protection.

Use Your Head
Here some tips to keep in mind when choosing a helmet:

  • Pay attention to the size and shape of the helmet. Try to find one that fits well with little adjustment needed. Try on different types and find the one that is most comfortable for you.
  • Helmets with numerous adjustment points will be more easily adjusted. If you are unsure how to adjust the straps, ask your retailer for instructions.
  • Most helmets have fitting pads of various sizes. Make sure a good selection comes with the helmet.
  • The helmet should have a CPSC safety rating.
  • Helmets vary in price. However, the size, shape, and safety standard rating are the most important features. A more expensive helmet is not necessarily a better one.

The Right Fit
Follow these three steps to get the right fit for your helmet:

  • Position the helmet properly. Leave long hair loose or in a low pony tail. With the straps undone, place the helmet so that it sits evenly on your head, the same distance from each ear. The front edge should be no more than one or two finger widths above your eyebrows.
  • If necessary, use the foam pads inside the helmet to make it more comfortable and fit more snugly. It should be snug, but not too tight.
  • Adjust the straps so that the helmet will stay in place. You will need to adjust the buckles, chin strap, and back strap. You will need to test your helmet fit every time you put it on.

If you are unsure which helmet is right for you, you should ask your local retailer for help. The staff can help make sure you have the helmet fitted properly. You should also read the instruction manual.
