Healing for Breast Cancer Survivors

Photo of a woman rowing a boatIf you have breast cancer, there is a comprehensive resource available to you -- the Breast Cancer Recovery Foundation, Inc. (BCRF). Its mission is to nurture, enhance and aid in the physical, emotional and spiritual recovery of those who have experienced breast cancer. Created by breast cancer survivors for breast cancer survivors, the foundation began in 1997.

Infinite Boundaries Retreat
The Infinite Boundaries retreat features discussion groups, art activities and low-intensity physical activities. Infinite Boundaries retreats are held in natural settings such as Madeline Island, on the shores of Lake Superior. Other retreats have been held in Door County and Spring Green, Wisconsin; Big Sky, Montana; and Houston, Texas. Participants talk about living with the fear that cancer will return and dealing with difficult feelings such as anger, trust, fear and guilt. They also talk about restoring sensuality and sexuality. Art activities encourage self- expression. They include American Indian beading, creating prayer flags and making masks. The retreat challenges participants to learn a new skill. Kayaking, fly fishing and bicycling are offered. Physical wellness activities through exercise, body movement, yoga, dance, massage and nutrition are also part of daily life during an Infinite Boundaries retreat.

Here are upcoming Infinite Boundaries retreats:

Infinite Boundaries Scholarships

Photo of two women practicing yogaBecause the journey to recovery involves women’s minds and their bodies, the foundation offers the Infinite Boundaries retreat, a four-day wellness program for women who have experienced breast cancer. Finding inner strength at retreats, women gain courage and hope to live each day beyond the boundaries of breast cancer.

Because women who have experienced breast cancer often face considerable medical expenses during and after diagnosis, the BCRF tries to make sure that all women, regardless of ability to pay, can attend the programs. To date, 80 percent of all participants have received full or partial scholarships. Limited, partial scholarship assistance may be available for each retreat.

If You Want to Help
If you would like to be part of this circle of giving and receiving, you can volunteer in the BCRF office or at health conferences in your area, help with fundraising activities or hand out brochures to local centers in your area. For more information, contact the BCRF at 1-608-821-1140 or send an e-mail to info@bcrf.org.
