St. Marys Hospital Medical Center, Madison, a member of SSM Health Care of Wisconsin, was honored in April by the American Nurses Credentialing Center with Magnet Recognition for Nursing Excellence, the highest national recognition for nursing care. The designation honors hospitals that foster the kind of environment that attracts and retains quality nurses. St. Marys Hospital is an inpatient provider of choice for Dean Health Plan members.
Nationally, only 50 acute care hospital nursing staffs -- there are more than 6,000 hospitals in the United States -- have ever been awarded this prestigious recognition, and St. Marys is the only hospital in south-central Wisconsin to have received it. Among the standards measured are:
- Excellence in nursing leadership
- Excellence in the practice of nursing
- Excellence in patient care
- Excellence in attention to cultural and ethnic diversity of employees, patients and patients’ families
Excellent patient care, better treatment outcomes, low nurse turnover rates and higher patient satisfaction are all hallmarks of Magnet hospitals. In receiving Magnet Recognition, St. Marys now serves as a nationwide model for nursing organizations.
"The recognition formally acknowledges St. Marys as a ‘magnet’ for great nurses,” says Deb Herr, R.N., team leader of St. Marys’ Magnet Steering Team. “I’ve always known we have a great nursing team, but it’s an exciting honor to be recognized at this level,” adds Joan Beglinger, vice president of patient services at St. Marys.
