Photo of couple with baby; 'It was helpful to have someone besides my doctors with whom I could talk and discuss possible options,' says Danella Cogswell, of Atlantic Beach, Fla. She endured extensive bed rest and successfully gave birth last year to her first child with the help of Clevette George, R.N., a Healthy Addition case manager. 'Clevette didn't seem like she was just doing a job. She was comforting and reassuring.'Caring Solutions for a Healthy Addition
As a smart health care consumer, you want value for your premium dollar. And you want to take advantage of all the benefits your health plan has to offer. One of the value-added benefits Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida offers its State of Florida group members is the Healthy Addition program — a program offered at no additional cost.

Healthy Addition is designed to encourage good preventive care for expectant mothers. Nurses provide education on healthy habits, prenatal information and emotional support. The goal is healthy mothers and healthy babies.

How to enroll in the program
After you get pregnant, your physician may refer you to us or you can enroll yourself. A pre-screening nurse will then contact you and ask a series of health-related questions to assess your risk of delivering a pre-term baby. If the Healthy Addition nurse determines that you are not at risk, you will receive an additional call from the nurse — sometime between your 28th and 32nd week of pregnancy — just to make sure that everything is going smoothly.

Mothers who are determined to be at risk will be enrolled in our Healthy Addition high-risk monitoring program.

The program works, and our surveys tell us that women who have participated in it find the information and support very helpful.

Analysis shows that premature newborns whose mothers participated in Healthy Addition as high-risk individuals had a longer development in the womb than those whose mothers did not participate in the program.

If you are interested in more information about this program, please call one of our dedicated customer service representatives at 1-800-825-2583.
