 Get a mammogram
One of the smartest ways for consumers to get the most for their premium dollar is to take advantage of the screening tools provided as part of their health care benefits. That’s never more true than in the case of breast cancer. One out of every nine women develops breast cancer.* It’s usually curable when detected early. And a woman’s best tool for early detection is the mammogram.

Recommended mammogram schedule**

  • One baseline for women 35 to 39.
  • Every two years for women between 40 and 49.
  • Every year for women 50 and older.
  • Or more frequently based on a physician’s recommendation.

When you have a mastectomy
Did you know that if you have a mastectomy and elect to have breast reconstruction, you are covered not only for reconstruction of the breast on which the mastectomy was performed but for surgery and reconstruction of the other breast to produce a symmetrical appearance.

In addition, your health plan covers prostheses and treatment of physical complications at all stages of the mastectomy, including lymphedemas.

The manner of procedures is determined in consultation with the attending physician and patient. Coverage is subject to the regular requirements of your plan.

Support the Race for the Cure
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida is proud to be a presenting sponsor of the Race for the Cure to be held in Miami Oct. 14. Funds raised go to benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer research and prevention.
